“A cartoon of glowing bacteria passing through the gastrointestinal tract. A bioluminescent peptide tagging system that is functional across multiple genera and species was developed. Tagged proteins can be tracked both in vitro and in situ, and recombinant bacteria can be enumerated from the different regions of the mouse gastrointestinal tract with accuracy comparable to that of conventional plate counts.”
